Pissing off artists...

Journal Entry: Fri Nov 25, 2005, 2:18 AM
Pissing off artists is not a good idea. Because a lot of us tend to be insane in the first place, and you never know what small, "harmless" comment might finally push us over the edge to a homicidal rampage. Also, as artists, we tend to know a lot of overstressed and underpaid friends, who also happen to be artists, and are therefore also equally unbalanced...

What am I speaking of? I am referring to careless comments left by people on artwork of original characters, comparing said original characters to some COMPLETELY UNRELATED LICENSED CHARACTER. Such as, oh, comparing a female elf character to Zelda (happened to a friend of mine), or comparing Lucas (the dude in my "Have you loved your nerd today?" picture) to Milo in Disney's Atlantis.

NOTHING PISSES OFF AN ARTIST MORE THAN HAVING THEIR ORIGINAL CHARACTERS COMPARED TO SOME OTHER SHIT CHARACTER. Don't do it. There. I've warned you all.

A few people have compared my style to that of Hyung Tae-Kim's, which both flattered and annoyed me. =\

...By the way, that nerdy guy rocks. :heart:

I've had someone compare my Tsume's Valentine picture to Precious Flame's art style. I hadn't heard of her before that, so I was kind of ambivalent about the comment. I checked her art, and it's gorgeous, but I'm kind of insulted that people think no one could possibly work in a similar style as a popular artist without having been influenced by them.

...Wait...Did that make any sense? Well, if it didn't I apologize, because it's 4:27 in the morning and I need to sleep soon. <.<;

Hee hee. Thanks for the Lucas support. I'm working on a better picture of him and his love interest, and will hopefully have it done soon. :heart: Nerds rule!! XD

Y'know, I just assume the person who makes those sorts of comments is actually trying to be nice, because they like whatever it is they're comparing it to. It depends on context, of course, but simple comparisons are going to happen. People relate to art in their own way. Getting upset over crits like that is just a good way to get ulcers.

I hear Elfquest/Wendy Pini comparisons all the time. I pretty much just ignore them now, though they never really annoyed me. Could be worse, could get compared to art I dislike intensely. I think as long as it's appealing stuff I get compared to, I don't mind it.

I know the person meant well. I tried not to get upset, but I'm just not that mellow of a person.

...I was probably more pissed off because I wasn't impressed by either Milo or Atlantis.

I know it likely doesn't make a difference, but...some people mean it as an insult and others don't, y'know? I mean, some folks actually think--rather sincerely--that they're paying the artist a compliment when they say something like that. :XD: I was tempted to do the same thing a couple of times. Half the folks wouldn't say it at all if they knew they were offending the people they intended to praise.

Someone compared Tetsu to Kurama. *snorts* Yeah, comparing my character so someone else's really annoys me...especially if they don't look vaguely alike.

Aww. D: I know how it is... my characters always seem to remind someone of someone else they know in real life. And I don't know if that's a good thing or not. Makes me feel a bit unoriginal sometimes. x:

I also really dislike the comments that try to pinpoint my character's sexuality just based off of what they look like. >>;

Having your style compared to something you've never heard of is pretty craptastic too. D| Seriously, how could it POSSIBLY be a helpful comment to go 'OMG THAT LOOKZ LIEK <insert character here> LOL!'

D< People need to be kicked!
